Dear Mr Tee, Thank you for your request for information about our decision not to offer you a place to read Law here at Downing. Although I was not myself involved in the interviews in this subject, I have consulted your file and read through the written report on the interview completed by my colleague. The first thing to say is that Downing this year had as usual a substantial number of candidates in Law. With 77 applicants for our 17 places, offers went only to those who impressed their interviewers as seeming outstanding. In what was an exceptionally strong year for Law, offers of places went to candidates scoring 8s and 9s in terms of our overall assessment (including interviews). Your score was 7.5. As this score suggests, you performed quite well in the interview. It was thought, however, that your answers were perhaps not so sharply focused as were those of some other candidates. Given the level of competition, especially from those candidates with very strong school records, this slight uncertainty was sufficient to deny you the offer of a place. As you know, we placed your papers in the Intercollegiate Pool, in the hopes that some other college might wish to make you the offer of a place. We were disappointed when this turned out not to be the case. I hope that this information, brief though it is, is of some assistance to you.
As it stands, I got pooled by Downing College. I guess the only good thing that comes out of it is that I'm not being rejected by Cambridge outright..at least not yet. On the average, about 20% of the pooled applicants are offer places every year. That's 1 out of 5. Quite a daunting figure ya know. And of that fraction, most of the applicants are being offered a place in another college eventually, while a small fraction gets offered a place in the original college that they applied to. This happens because the college that they applied to would have wanted to see applicants from other colleges through the pool before giving out its final offers. Sigh. Come on downing..I didn't apply to the most statistically competitive college in Cambridge to get pooled!
Oh, look what I found on some pooling guidelines to admission tutors on Cambridge's website: "Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and PR China: all applicants who scored 8 or above when interviewed by the Cambridge team overseas MUST be pooled, and 7s at your discretion. Failure to pool an outstanding applicant in a previous year had serious repercussions."
well, come end of january, i'll know whether i'm good enough.
